"Brown is very grounded and rooted, representing earth," says designer Joe Nahem of New York's Fox-Nahem Associates. "It's a strong foundation on which to build in any room."

"In this kitchen, the client had requested we work with the existing cabinets that came with their new spec house," says Nahem. "To give the space a bit more personality, we replaced the existing island with a streamlined rich-oxblood lacquered island with a matching poured impervious-glass top from France. The color for the island was chosen to contrast with the existing cabinets while providing a lot of depth and warmth."

"Brown is the new black," says New York designer Vicente Wolf. "It is a great foil for different tones like pearl gray, tangerine orange, and powder blue. It makes a room feel earthy and gives a sense of richness."

"For this room, we layered the brown," says Wolf. "The floor is wool, the chairs are heathered wool, the couch is alpaca with velvet, silk, and faille pillows. The wall covering is textured cotton. I brought in antique wood pieces to finish it off."

Madeline Stuart

"There truly is nothing that doesn't go with brown," says Los Angeles designer Madeline Stuart. "Whether you're using it to highlight stronger, more acid colors, like chartreuse, acid yellows, and lime greens, or using it to tone down a room, brown is a fantastic chameleon of a color. There's a great range, and if you're using brown the right way, it's timeless and durable."

"This room overlooks the Snake River Valley and the Teton mountain range in Jackson Hole, Wyoming," says Stuart. "The palette incorporates the quietest elements of what's outside—the tree trunks and bark, the mountains, and the earth. We let everything on the outside speak to the color. We tried to keep the interior as quiet and deferential as possible. Brown is an incredibly user-friendly color, and it's very easy to live with."

"The color brown is a strong neutralizer," says New York designer Steven Gambrel. "It reacts really well with gray, as a way to add contrast and as a hit that grounds the palette."

"Although shiny-brown walls in a library or dining room are classic, it is the appeal of brown as a border—as in these roman shades—that I admire," says Gambrel. "Chocolate-brown fabric can also help wood furniture become part of the overall scheme with a shared color."

"This is the media room at my house, which opens up onto the backyard and pool area," says Stilin. "It has floor-to-ceiling board-and-batten paneling, and I like the contrast of the dark-brown upholstered sofa with the crisp-white walls."
